Did you know that there was a stretch of river, right here in
Texas that is home to some of the best top water fishing for
smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass anywhere? The first 22 miles of
river below the Lake Whitney dam are shallow, gem clear and
virtually unspoiled by man. There is abundant wild life such as osprey,
wild turkeys and deer. The towering limestone bluffs that form the
banks along this stretch of river are thick with ferns, wildflowers,
bubbling springs and water falls. And then there are the fish, Chris
Shafer has been fishing this stretch of river for over 15 years and it
just keeps getting better. Chris has been featured in literally
hundreds of national publications such as Bassmaster Magazine, Outdoor
Life, Southwest Fly Fishing & The Texas Sporting Journal. He has
also been featured on many popular fishing shows such as Fishing Texas,
Outdoor Trails, Americana Outdoors and Fishing Country. He has numerous
record fish on lake Whitney and the Brazos river as well as several big
fish awards. Chris caught the current Brazos river record smallmouth in
May of 1997, a 7.0 lb., 22.5 inch beauty. The fish you catch in this
river are unique, they are very muscular due to the strong current
produced intermittently by the dam. Catching just one of these fish on
a fly or spinning rod will be an experience you won't soon forget. The
numbers of fish caught in a day varies with angling experience, a good
day for a fly fisherman is 20-50 fish and spinning tackle usually
produces anywhere from 20-100 fish per day. The fish vary in size
from barely bigger than your lure to 7 pounds. The average fish is 2.5
to 4 lbs. The season varies with the weather, usually extending from
March 1 through November with the warmer months producing the most fish
in a day. All bass fishing is catch and release. Customers supply their
own lunch, drinks & fly tackle. Conventional tackle & lures are
provided. We are equipped with
Kistler
Custom Fishing Rods, proudly made one at a time right here in Texas for
the very best fising experience. The available river is broken up into 3 sections approximately 8
miles long. Access to the river is very limited and once you start there is
no turning back until a take out spot is reached, for this reason this trip
is not recommended for persons with heat intolerance or potential health
problems, traversing the river can be strenuous under adverse conditions,
please take this under consideration when planning your trip.
The
cost is $300.00 per day for 2 people with a 2 person capacity per boat, 2 boats
including guides are available. Please call with any concerns or for an
update on current conditions when planning your trip. Trips are available
Monday-Friday.
Recommendations: Polarized sunglasses, a hat and good foot wear. Due to
the variable water conditions some wading in ankle deep water may be
required, all persons onboard may have to help drag the boat over a shallow
gravel bar. Packing light is a must, bring what you need for the day but
leave the non essentials behind. This leaves more room in the boat for
fishing and lightens the load if dragging is required. Wading boots or tennis shoes with wool socks are recommended. DO
NOT wear "river sandals", flip flops or any shoes you do not want to get wet
or that have slick soles. You will also want a camera and a long wearing
sunscreen. Please be advised that sunscreen is the most effective when
applied in the morning as you are dressing for the day, this provides the
best protection and keeps your hands free of greasy lotions that may be
harmful to fish and equipment. The photo
